Katarina Witt started ice skating when she was five. She was able to prove her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted children. It was here that she got to know the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Witt made her mark in the second position she placed in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt captured the eyes of all and she has dominated her sport ever since. Olympic Erfolg In the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating following a heatedly-contested competition. The winner of the competition was a more competitive race the following year. The free skater was unable to win however she was awarded the gold medal for the mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. While she did not win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with her seventh place finish. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
