In the biological sense, an animal, or human is a person who has matured. Adult is a term applied to human beings to refer to social and legal concepts. Contrary to the term "minor" or "non-adult" legally-aged adult refers to a person who is a an age at which they are majority. They are thought to be to be responsible, independent and competent. It is also possible to view them as an "major". 18 is the typical minimum age to become an adult but this could vary based on the country of origin and legal status, as well the maturity of the mind.

In the lifespan of human beings Adulthood refers to the point when a person has achieved full mental and physical maturity. Adulthood, as typically understood, is at the age of either 20 or 21. It is generally believed that middle age starts at 40 or so years of age, and is then it will be about 60. Early adulthood begins between the years of between 18 to 30. Middle adulthood occurs from the mid-30s through to the 60s. The transition to late adulthood begins around mid-60s. When we reach the early stages of adulthood (between 20 and 40) the bodies of our children are at their peak of maturity although the weight and height of our bodies may rise slightly. In young adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their peak, including the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed as well as sensory capabilities, the functioning of our heart.
